What does recovery mean to you right now?

Recovery isn't a word with just one definition.

For one person, it may mean finding peace. For another, learning to trust again. For someone else, simply making it through today with a little more hope than yesterday.

And if you're a male survivor, what recovery means to you today may be very different from what it meant when you first began. There may have been a time when recovery simply meant being able to acknowledge what happened. Later, it might have meant talking about it without being overwhelmed by shame. Eventually, it may become learning how to have healthier relationships, establish boundaries, experience intimacy differently, or understand yourself beyond what happened to you.

That's important because sometimes we create an image of what a "recovered" survivor is supposed to look like. Maybe you think you shouldn't get triggered anymore. You shouldn't struggle with trust. You shouldn't become angry, shut down, or occasionally fall back into an old pattern. And when those things happen, you wonder whether all the work you've done has really made a difference.

But recovery doesn't necessarily mean the past never shows up again. Sometimes it means the past no longer gets to make every decision.

You begin recognizing what belongs to then and what belongs to now. You understand your reactions a little better. You find your voice. You make choices because they're what you want, rather than because fear, shame, secrecy, or someone else's actions taught you how you were supposed to live.

And perhaps, over time, recovery becomes less about recovering from something and more about discovering something: who you are, what matters to you, what kind of relationships you want, what brings you joy, and what you want to do with the years ahead of you.

There isn't one right definition—only the one that reflects where you are on your journey right now.

So maybe the question isn't, "Am I recovered yet?"

Maybe it's:

"What does recovery look like for me in this season of my life?"

Wherever your answer is today, your next step matters just as much as your last one.

If this question resonates with you, you're invited to share one thoughtful reflection in the comments.
